AAMC Annual Meeting 2016 - President’s Address: In Search of Community

Vdieo: Darrell G. Kirch, MD, delivers his plenary address during Learn Serve Lead 2016: The AAMC Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington.

At Learn Serve Lead: 2006 in Seattle, AAMC President and CEO Darrell Kirch spoke about the search for the public good: our institutions of medical education, discovery, and care struggled to stay afloat during a recession. With little commitment to protecting our public goods, people became isolated. A decade later, the search for community looms large.

The country has recently experienced challenges that have tested our resolve and shaken us to our core. But time and time again, academic medicine has helped us restore our common good, creating the community we as a nation have been striving toward. We see that in Florida Hospital Orlando and Orlando Regional Medical Center rushing to help people affected by the tragic Pulse nightclub shooting. Or how Michigan State University and Hurley Children’s Hospital are teaming up to serve kids in Flint, Michigan, who have been harmed by a human-made environmental crisis. Even in despair, there will always be shows of strength from our academic medicine community.
