All great minds don't think alike

Our identity influences how we think and solve problems, says Scott Page, PhD, an expert in cognitive diversity. And the best solutions come from blending different perspectives.

We all come to the table with a range of diverse identities that inform how we see the world. This so-called “cognitive diversity” allows each of us to bring our unique insights to the challenges we face, says Scott E. Page, PhD, the Leonid Hurwicz Collegiate Professor of Complex Systems, Political Science, and Economics at the University of Michigan.

In this video, Page explains how working with people across diverse identities leads to more sophisticated thinking, and in effect, better outcomes. With so many perspectives coming together in academic medicine, it’s critical that we respect and embrace the differences we all have. Page is the author of books including “Model Thinking: What You Need to Know to Make Data Work for You” and “The Diversity Bonus: How Great Teams Pay Off in the Knowledge Economy.”
