The AAMC submitted comments on Mar. 27 to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Disease Prevention (ODP) in response to a request for Stakeholder Input on Opportunities for Increased Collaboration to Advance Prevention Research [NOT-OD-20-072].
The NIH requested information on four inquiries on increasing collaboration and coordination between the ODP and intra- and extramural organizations as it implements its five-year strategic plan.
In its comments, the AAMC praised the inclusion of health disparities research and implementation science in its 2019-2023 strategic plan. The AAMC recommended that ODP formalize connections between the ODP and nonprofit hospitals’ community and population health implementation efforts, including Community Health Needs Assessments and value-based care initiatives.|
The AAMC also recommended engagement with other prevention and translational research programs and sites such as the National Center to Advance Translation Science’s Clinical and Translational Science Awards, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Prevention Research Centers, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute through new implementation and evaluation grants, especially around maternal morbidity and mortality, preparedness, and substance use.
Finally, the AAMC recommended multiplatform dissemination of resources that raise awareness about prevention science and its outcomes funded by the Department of Health and Human Services.
