On Feb. 27, the AAMC joined 51 other organizations in letters to the House and Senate lead sponsors of the Healthcare Workforce Resilience Act (H.R. 6205/S. 3211). Citing the AAMC’s physician workforce projections report, the letters highlighted health workforce shortages and their impact on underserved and rural communities. The letters offered support for the bill and urged Congress to consider this legislation as a solution for addressing health workforce shortages.

The legislation was reintroduced on Nov. 2, 2023, by Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) and Reps. Brad Schneider (D-Ill.), Don Bacon (R-Neb.), Yadira Caraveo (D-Colo.), and Tom Cole (R-Okla.). The bill would reduce green card backlogs and prioritize health care workers by recapturing 40,000 unused employment-based visas.
